The Not So Simple View of Reading Series: Reading Comprehension (Part Four)

This professional learning opportunity is the fourth and final session in a four-part series designed to begin conversations around best practices for teaching reading. This session will explore the reading comprehension portion of The Simple View of Reading (Gough & Tunmer, 1986). The Simple View of Reading is a foundational conceptual model every teacher should know how to apply in their classroom. Reading comprehension is the act of understanding and interpreting information within a text. It results from efficient decoding and the ability to understand language. This workshop will allow participants to explore the traits of a skilled comprehender, the role of fluency, the importance of background knowledge, and the role of memory.

Welcome! This self-paced course is designed to explore the reading comprehension portion of the Simple View of Reading. This is an introductory course which will provide a basic understanding. For more or additional information on any of the topics, please contact the course facilitator. Throughout the six lessons, participants will engage in readings, videos, reflections,  and multiple quiz-type activities that must be completed to complete the course and to receive CTLE credit.
